Mid-week Motivation - Vintage Spring Card

Hi all - it's mid-week motivation time and here is a little reminder of this week's challenge

VICTORIAN ROMANCE

Just think flowers, hearts, lace and pearls - all done in beautiful rosy vintage colours.

I have another card for you today - it's very similar to Monday's card but using some very fancy folds and turning them into a Spring Card. Take a look

Here is how I made it

1) Take a piece of card stock 101/2" x 51/4".

2) Fold in half.

3) Open again so that the fold in the middle is vertical. Fold the right hand edge into the middle so that it meets the middle fold.

4) Open your card stock again and lay it flat. Now take the bottom left hand corner and fold the card up as in the diagram. The bottom edge should lie against the fold made in step 3.
Open your card and repeat the process with the top left hand corner.

5) Your card stock now look like this.

6) Mark the centre point on the left hand vertical edge and then cut from this point down to the start of the first score lines - like in the photograph.

When folded up the finished card looks like this from the front,

and like this from the back.

MMM - Mid-week Motivation

Morning all - this week as I am quite busy Caz has very kindly provided us with some fantastic inspiration - take a look

For the mid week motivation I would like to ask you to

please pass the salt and water for a short tutorial, any 3 colours of dye based ink will do.

These are the ingredients you will need.

First cut a piece of card to make a tag, or you can use whatever size sheet of card to use for more than one project, I have managed to get four cards of various sizes from an A4 sheet.

blend 3 colours of dye based inks on your card, to completely cover it. place on a sheet of spare paper.

Spray with water until completely wet. Sprinkle the salt in patches onto the wet card. The water will disperse the inks. The salt will draw out some colour in pockled patches. leave to dry as naturally as possible for at least one hour.

When dry gently rub off the salt, I find my fingers are better than any tools, you can immediatley see the magic results once you have removed the salt. Some areas even have a bling effect.

You can then stamp onto your tag, add some pretty ribbons or fibres. A tag could be wrapped around a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates or another gift. We can even add a tag to a card as an embellishment. I have left embellishments off this tag so you can hopefully see the effects of the salt.

MMM - Mid-week Motivation - Recessed Window Card Tutorial

I was asked to do a tutorial for the card I made for Monday's dt line-up. So here it is - hope you like it.

Take a piece of card stock 5" x 101/4". Score your card stock at 5" and 51/4". Fold your card and crease well with a bone folder

Open your card and on the inside draw in the diagonal lines with a pencil. Decide how big you want your aperture to be and draw in the square. Now draw a second square inside the first 1/4" in from each side. Score both squares with an embossing tool.

Now cut on the diagonal lines ONLY within the two squares. You can now rub out all of your pencil lines.

Bend the outside score lines in and then fold the second score lines the opposite way. Crease these folds well with a bone folder.

Take a piece of card stock a cut to the size of your front aperture - you may need to trim it a tiny bit smaller for it to fit comfortably.
Your Recessed Window Card is now ready for decorating.

MMM - Midweek Motivation - Brayered Scene

Today's inspirational piece is a short tutorial on brayering a scene. The card I made for the dt line up on Monday (here) was made following a tutorial by Michelle Zindorf found here. I also used this tutorial as the inspiration for today's card.

Place two circles of post it notes opposite each other as shown in the picture. Using a blue ink pad and a brayer apply the ink to the paper. Apply to the top and then to the bottom so that you get a paler section in the middle.

Add a darker ink to the top of the paper.

I then referred to Michelle's tutorial and used the Lovely as a Tree stamps to add bushes and trees.

Here I created the reflection - you can see that I rolled my brayer over my stamp and then transferred the image to the paper under the main trees to make a true mirror image.

The foreground was added using some silhouette stamps (SU Upsy Daisy). These were stamped in a very dark ink and then a paler ink to create depth.

Here is the finished card.

This brayering technique can be used to create both daytime and night time scenes.

MMM - Mid-week Motivation - from Suzanne.

Suzanne here with this week's mid-week motivation. Bearing in mind that it is Fliss' month of challenges (Nature) and knowing that Fliss enjoys DIY crafting I have decided to show hand-made rosette flowers. There are dies available to help make these but some of us cannot have every single piece of stash and have to make do....that's me!

Please forgive the quality of my photographs...I go to work in the dark and return in the dark so photographs are very poor due to the artificial light.

I coloured a piece of card with distress inks and then spritzed with water.

When dry I punched two edges with an EK Success border punch. You could just tear the paper edges for a ragged rosette if you have no border punches.

I then cut two different widths from each edge which had been punched.
Using a score board (or you could just use ruler and embossing tool) - score at even intervals. This is down to your preference.

Concertina/fan - then adhere the edges making a circle. My recommendation is to use a tacky wet glue or glossy accents. Tape or glue stick could be used but this is more messy and there is a risk of your rosette coming undone. I also place my adhesive in the middle of the rosette to make extra secure.

The same is done to the narrower piece of punched card making a smaller rosette for layering.

A button completes ...you could use pearls, gems, bottle top etc etc.

DT member Fliss has chosen a lovely theme for us this month with Nature and I am simply loving the Bird challenge this month.
Fliss is also a fan of DIY crafting so this week I am sharing with you a card I made using some hand made background paper.
Firstly I took a piece of white card stock cut to fit the card blank I'm using. I took a stamp and stamped it all over the card stock filling as much of the card as I could

Using a Promarker I then randomly coloured in some of the eggs - the Promarker colour is very similar to the ink used to stamp the eggs.

With a sponge I added some subtle colouring to the card. I then took an old pair of scissors (never use good ones for this technique) and distressed my edges

After inking these edges with a dark brown ink I then made my card .
Don't forget that you can add glitter or embossing to your shop bought backing papers too to make them both personal and unique.

This week's post is a bit of a cheat really - here is what I have to show you

This is a hanging decoration - using red ribbon as the hanger. What you do is pull the bead up to the knot in the ribbon and the decoration un-folds. The bead is then pushed back and the decoration looks like this

OK - so the reason this is a cheat is..................... there will be a tutorial on how to make this decoration but as it is the subject of a workshop I am doing tomorrow night it won't be available till 7.30pm tomorrow night. You will be able to find it here on my Craft Club blog (you may be lucky and find it sooner - it just depends on how organised I am between now and then!)

Hello all - sorry I'm a day late this week with the Mid-week Motivation but before I get into that please do take a look in the Deezine Team section in the top bar or click here to see our two fabulous new DT ladies Val and Mynnette. They will be debuting as fully fledged designers on Monday morning when our theme for December starts.

Do you remember the box I made Monday? Here's a reminder

What you may not know is that it was very unfinished and looked like this inside

As you can see it's meant to be an Exploding Box and I am pleased to announce that it is finally completed - take a look

I started with some 12" x 12" Kraft card and on the inside of the first box is a Christmas sentiment. The second box has been decorated with some Christmas bunting and when that box is opened.........................

...................there is another box decorated with Christmas trees. This little box opens up to reveal......................

...........a little hand made tree decoration. This is made with six punched Christmas tree shapes that have been folded and glued together with some ribbon in the middle to make the hanger.

The white blobs are some liquid pearls (sorry it's an awful picture)

MMM Mid-week Motivation - Snowflakes

Good afternoon, here's a card I made to fit in with our Flowers, Foliage or Snowflakes theme for this week, don't forget that we are still focusing on Christmas

It's a square card base with some blue card stock layered on the top. The white card stock was put through my Cuttlebug first to cut out the rectangle and then in a snowflake embossing folder. Snowflakes were punched from thin card stock, sponged with blue ink and glittered before sticking over the aperture. A pale blue ribbon was added to the side with some silver elastic cord and various beads and sequins.
Hope this inspires you to create something for our challenge this week - pop back in a couple of days to see who we have picked to join our Deezine Team - Jacqueline.

MMM Mid-week Motivation - CAS Christmas Cards.

Our DT Call has now closed, thank you to all who entered - we will be letting you know by e-mail soon if you have been successful.

Mid-week Motivation has returned and I have a quick step by step tutorial on creating a Clean and Simple card with the emphasis on the sentiment.

Take piece of white card stock and stamp a Clarity Stamps sentiment in Versa Color Green Tea ink, then emboss it using Silver Pearl embossing powder.
I'm sure that the same effect could be achieved by printing your sentiment on the computer and I know that there are products on the market that allow you to print and then emboss.

The embossing over the green ink has given it a very subtle sheen but any embossing powder could be used or you could just used ink.

Use some Versamark ink to stamp poinsettias on to some vellum paper. This is another of my freebies from the Craft Stamper mag which was also embossed using the Silver Pearl. Take great care when heating vellum as it doesn't take much for it to burn!

Select which parts of the image you want to use and colour them in.

Carefully cut out your coloured images making sure that the inks have dried. I used some brush tipped markers and they took ages to dry and I ended up having to blot them on tissue. I don't know how Promarkers would work on vellum but the may dry quicker.

Layer up your images and secure with a brad. I also attached the brad to the white card stock before mounting on to green card as this then hides the legs of the brad on the back.

MMM - Mid-week Motivation - Haunted House Treat box

Good afternoon everyone - did you think I had forgotten that today was Wednesday?!
Today's piece of inspiration starts with a piece of black card stock 8 1/4" x 6 1/2". It was scored in both directions every 2". So you had 4 squares and a bit one way and 3 squares and a bit the other. Take a look at the photo to see what I did next

I used my Cuttlebug and a die to make a hole in one of the middle squares, cut off a bit of the edge on the right and then cut the bottom score lines. What looks like a square piece of paper is in fact some vellum which was attached on the inside over the hole.

Next I folded my card stock to make a box shape and secured it with stick glue. The bottom flaps fold up to make a strong base. Pinch the sides at the top to make a milk carton shape.

A lid for the box was made by cutting a strip of card stock 5" x 2". It was scored at 2", 2 1/2" and 3". Small pieces of gray card stock were cut and added to make roof tiles and were attached below the score lines as in the photo above.
When you put the lid on the box and decorate it - it looks like this

The pumpkins were made by punching out orange circles, folding them in half and sticking 3 together then attaching them to the house.

MMM - Mid-week Motivation - Creating Inchie Artwork.

Hi all - today's work is a quick and easy Inchie ATC.
I started with an ATC blank and stamped in Versamark ink the images I had chosen. I then splodged some Cosmic Shimmer mica powders all over it

The powders were then brushed all over the inked card until they had blended together and stuck to the Versamark ink

The card was then trimmed and cut into 1" x 1" square pieces

These were then inked around the edges. I then took another ATC blank and inked that around the edge before arranging the squares. The squares were then stuck down with double sided tape

MMM Mid-week Motivation - Autumn Scene

Good morning all - sorry I'm a bit late posting today as I have just got back from a weekend away and I know you all want to know last week's top 3 so here they are

This week's challenge was to create something autumnal with a tree or trees and today's card was made using sponges. I buy them from the art department in craft shops and they come round in a pack of 3 and I cut them up into segments. I use one segment for each of my Stampin' Up inks and I put a little tab of the corresponding card stock on each sponge so that they don't get mixed up - it's also something to hold whilst sponging.

I started with a piece of cream card stock, punched a circle from a post it note and placed it on the card. I chose my autumnal colours and began to build my scene

The background hills are created by tearing some copy paper. I then added some fir trees in a very pale colour in the distance.

When all the card stock had been sponged darker trees were added along with the focal point of my scene - some birds on branches

When I made this stamp I designed it so that that it could be used for any season - as you can see I have stamped some autumn leaves on this one. The birds looked very pale in the trees so I went over them with a black Promarker with a fine tip added on.
The finishing touches were made and the card stock was matted on to some dark brown card stock and finally placed on a square cream card blank

All the stamps used except for the tiny leaves are my own designs - the tiny leaves are some I borrowed from a Clarity set.

MMM - Mid-week Motivation - Autumn Resist withVaseline

Morning all. Before I get on with this week's motivation spot I would like to announce this month's winner

Here is a technique that I tried out today - resist with Vaseline. I also used my brayer with this - here's how I did it

You will need - Vaseline, Speedball Brayer, Inks, Stamp and some foam material - I think it's called Funky Foam?

Spread some Vaseline on to the foam material and press your stamp into it. Stamp onto some card taking care not to press to firmly - the stamp will have a tendency to skid. Repeat randomly all over your card.

Ink up your brayer and start to build up layers of ink. I started with a light colour and added layers of darker ink.

The more layers of ink that you add the more your design will stand out. When you are satisfied that you have enough colour gently buff the images to remove any Vaseline residue.

MMM Mid-week Motivation - Using Patterned Papers.

Good morning every one. Today's Mid-week motivation is brought to us by Suzanne - take a look

"Sorry all but I have made a little mistake - I was in such a hurry prior to my holidays getting all my pieces done I omitted to take midway/instruction photos so hope you will forgive me.

Everyone has patterned papers in their stash - some we have had a while (and no longer like) or others that are highly patterned (and we are not sure how to use them). The Graphic 45 steampunk papers are a fine example of this with lots of elements on them and if you were to use a whole page flat then it may be "too much".

By cutting into the paper and extracting elements the paper can go a long way.

My canvas is covered with a 12x12 page - the leftovers have been used i.e. the butterflies and flying clock were cut out separately from the reverse. I have also overstamped onto the patterned paper - this is also another good way of "changing" patterned paper as is spritzing and stencilling.

Next week the mid week motivation will be back to its usual professional standards but I hope you have enjoyed looking at my canvas......."

MMM - Mid-week Motivation - Faux Metal.

This week the mid-week Motivation is brought to you from dt member Fliss.
My mid week motivation is about faux metal as I only have metal embellishments and there are a couple of very cheap ways of getting the metal look without using the real thing.

Faux Metal With Aluminium Foil Tape

For this technique you will need a roll of foil tape which I found in the tool section of the Pound Shop. You'll need a strip of card a little wider than the tape. I'm using the Alterations Sewing Room set as the dress form fits perfectly on the tape width.

After die cutting the dress form, I then embossed it with the Cuttlebug Clockworks folder .

I then sponged mine with the StazOn inks shown but you could use alcohol inks or Palette inks if you prefer.

This the very lovely Cath has done this piece to inspire you
This weeks challenge was to use Monochrome when doing your Steam Punk piece. I know a lot of people have a problem with this and stick to Black and White, but I have found if I only have the colour I am going to use out on my desk and no other I don't get tempted to add anything else.

For this card I have just used Walnut Stain distress ink, blending it over the edges to get a dark base card.

I then made a nice puddle of ink and water on my mat and dunked my card in to it to get a lighter, patchy background.

I then used the ink pad to ink up my stamp and stamp onto plain card. I have found if you use these inks to stamp on glossy card you can emboss them if you are quick even though they are dye inks.

I then stamped onto the background once it was dry and stuck this to the card I had edged, then added the topper that I had smudged lightly with a water brush to it with foam pads.

I hope this gives you some ideas when using just one colour.

MMM - Mid-week Motivation - Steampunk ATCs.

Hi folks - it's great to see every one's entries to the STEAMPUNK - ATC Challenge ( see here for details) - it look like you are all enjoying it.
For this month I am taking a break form the Mid-week Motivation spot and handing over to my brilliantly talented design team. This week we have a piece from Caz - take a look
If you're new to making ATCs, they can be an interesting way to experiment and try new techniques before venturing onto a full size card. I usually make mine with the off cuts from cards, but if I intend making a few here is a neat way you can get 9 from one British A4 card. 3 vertical lines at 2.5" x 3 horizontal lines at 3.5".

Continuing our Steampunk ATC theme I made a triptych, where 3 individual ATCs of the same theme have been joined together to form an interesting set which can stand to be displayed. I look forward to seeing your Steampunk ATCs this week. Have fun ladies , and any gents who may be interested.

This is the first Monday in September at that means a brand new theme and challenges. This month they have been chosen by Cath and her theme is STEAMPUNK.
Steampunk is based around the Victorian era and tends to incorporate elements of science fiction and fantasy with futuristic innovations such as fashion, culture, architecture and art.
So that being said your first challenge is to create a STEAMPUNK ATC.
ATCs can be any medium, stamped or collaged however they must be 2.5" x 3.5". Here are some dt samples to inspire you

For my dt piece I made some 3D flowers

The flowers are very easy to make and you will need a small scallop circle punch or Nestability die, some brads, a pokey tool and some coloured paper.
Take a look at this picture and I will explain all

From the top left hand corner - punch out 8 circles with your punch, scrunch them up tightly and then unravel them. Place them all on top of one another, pierce a hole in the middle and secure with a brad. Then start to scrunch the petals back up around the brad. The brad will be completely hidden and you should end up with a flower like the one in the bottom right hand corner of the pic.
If you put these flowers on a card it will make it very difficult to put in an envelope - I must admit the I only use them for special occasions where I can hand deliver my card. However I always make a pretty box to put the card in - like so

This week our added extra to the THINGS WITH WINGS is ACETATE. one of my favourite things to do with acetate is Shaker Cards. A small aperture is made, filled with sparkly things and enclosed with a window of acetate. Take a look

I took a 5" x 5" cream card base and stamped a frame around the edge using Stampin' Up's Vintage Vogue. In the middle was placed the butterfly on 3D foam pads. Around this was placed a double layer frame of 3D foam tape. Some glitter fibres were tipped into the middle. I then took a piece of cream card stock big enough to cover the 3D foam tape and cut a piece from the middle. It was stamped - again using the Vintage Vogue and then a piece of acetate was stuck to the back with double sided tape. I then removed the backing from the 3D foam tape and stuck down the window. I then decorated the rest of the card with flowers stamped using Vintage Vogue.

MMM - Mid-week Motivation - Fairy Key Chain Mini Album.

This is a project that started life as a humble chewing gum packet like this

I got my idea from a video I found on You Tube ages ago by Laura at Follow the Paper Trail - if you are interested pop over and take a look here.
So what I did was to remove all the gum, open the box out and cover it with decorative papers

I then cut out some tag shapes on my Cuttlebug - I only used thin card stock as they are then covered both sides with decorative papers. I used a mixture of Papermania and Docrafts papers with various fairy designs on them

The tags are then joined together with a ball chain which is then threaded through the side of the box. The tags fit inside and it looks like this when it's closed

A couple of little fairy charms were added to the chain to finish it off.

MMM Mid-week Motivation - Digital Images.

I'm a bit late posting today as I have a sick kitten - chewed something he shouldn't no doubt!
Anyway this week's theme is Birds or Bugs - I don't do bugs as a rule - too many legs but here is a cute digital image that I downloaded off the Internet a while ago.

The images are from the Digi Stamp Boutique and you are able to print them off any size you like and treat them the same way that you would treat any stamped image.
I coloured mine with Promarkers and then cut it to size

To make my card a little more interesting I made it into an easel shape. I took a 5" x 5" card base and diagonally scored the one half. I then took another and cut off half

I then decorated the single panel with some card and decorative paper, mounted my image and added some flowers

This was then mounted onto the scored half of the card base which was also decorated with card, paper and flowers. A few butterflies were added randomly

MMM - Mid-week Motivation - Dragonflies.

We have kicked off the month of August with a cracking new theme of THINGS WITH WINGS and the first challenge is BUTTERFLIES OR DRAGONFLIES. I love things like this and as I had done a butterfly card for the dt on Monday I thought I would try dragonflies today. So I gathered a few bits and pieces together and had a play.

As you can see I had paper, card stock, stamps, inks and a bit of embossing powder. The first thing I did was to sponge a piece of white card stock with some green and some pale blue ink. I use some sponges that I picked up in an art shop. They are round but when cut into wedges (I make about 8) they are the perfect shape for sponging - take a look

Colour co-ordination is very important to me and I use Stampin' Up card stock and inks because they match. As you can see my sponges are all individually labeled to match each colour - it also means that I don't have to spend ages looking through my sponges to find the right one.
When I had sponged my card I then stamped my images - a flower head and dragonfly

To make the flower head stand out a bit more against the green I went over it with a fine glue pen and sprinkled it with some white embossing powder. I did the same to the dragonfly wings but used a holographic powder instead - they were then set with a heat gun

I then set about making the card. I took some thin blue card and mounted it on to a 5" x 5" white card blank. That was then covered with a piece of graph paper which I had stamped with one of my favourite flourish stamps (it's from Hot off the Press)

Finally I mounted the card stock with the flowers and dragonflies on to the card and added a few finishing touches - hope you like it and found this tutorial helpful - bye for now - Jacqueline.

MMM Mid-week Motivation - Lace and Pearls.

Sorry - I'm a day late with this. Today's inspiration piece is an ATC. They are great for using up card scraps and odd images left over and don't take too long to make. This one I made today was an image downloaded from the Craft Stamper Magazine web site in the resources section. What's great about that is they can be re sized so they can be used for scrapbooking, card making or in this case ATCs.
Now I think I have said before - ATCs are always 2.5" x 3.5" - so after cutting my piece of card stock that size I edged it in very thin double sided tape. On to that I stuck some scrap lace to make a sort of frame and then I placed my image on top of that - please take a look

The image has also been distressed and sponged with some Tea Dye DIs. My pearls are some I had stashed away and are stuck together in a string, these were glued on using some 3D clear gloss finish. The flower was very easily made by punching out several small scallop circles - I think I used 8. They were all then scrunched up tightly and un-raveled. I pierced a hole through them with my pokey tool and threaded them all onto a brad. When the brad is closed the circles can then be manipulated up-wards to form the flower shape. I inked the edges of mine again with the Tea Dye but the edges can also be dabbed with glue and then sprinkled with glitter.

MMM - Mid-week Motivation - Crumpled and Torn Vellum

We are still creating using our Vintage theme courtesy of Fliss - don't forget that this month's overall winner will get a chance to be a guest designer on our team sometime next month.
This week it was the turn of Shabby Chic - Torn or Crumpled. My card today demonstrates both. I have taken a piece of vellum, crumpled and distressed it and also torn the edges - take a look

I have also crumpled my ribbon by grabbing a couple of threads at one end and gently pulling, as you can see it has been secured using small brads. The background paper is K& Co. Blue Awning and the bird cage stamp is from Stampin' Up's Nature Walk.

MMM - Mid-week Motivation -Vintage Gold Embossed Edges.

Hello everyone, welcome to this week's Mid-week Motivation spot. Today I have something to show you that was inspired by the August issue of Craft Stamper magazine. (Fliss one the MMM DT has done a fabulous piece inspired by Craft Stamper too. It's nothing to do with the Vintage challenge but well worth a look). The piece that caught my eye was the Delicate Folds book-card by designer Debbie Dolphin. I changed the way I made mine by reducing the size and making an atc - the tutorial was easy enough to follow to enable me to do this. Please take a look:

After assembling all my components I distressed the pieces with Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink and then ran a Versamark ink pad all around the edges. I then sprinkled them with gold embossing powder and heated them with a heat gun. I do hope that you find this piece useful - I had great fun making it! See you soon - Jacqueline.

Our challenge this week set by the lovely Fliss is still on a VINTAGE theme but we would like to see some EMBOSSING. That can be heat embossing with powder, embossing folders on a die cutting machine such as a Big Shot or Cuttlebug or using a stencil and light box - but it must follow the theme.
I would also like to say that I have had to change the rules a little. Please be aware that you will only be able to enter this challenge and five others besides. It seems that a few have been getting carried away with the amount of challenges entered and not quite reading the rules of the challenges correctly. MMM - Mid-week Motivation.

We have moved on to a month of VINTAGE themed projects and this week it is a colour theme - BROWN & CREAM + PINK or BLUE.
Today I am hoping to inspire you with some vintage ATCs.

There are strict rules concerning ATCs - they must be 2 1/2" x 3 1/2". Their full name is Artist Trading Card and they are swapped between crafters.
Here are some close ups

This one is made using some vintage rub ons, stamps and Distress Inks.

I tried to create the feeling of a vintage note book with this by using stamps, coloured pencils and Distress Inks to age the images.

This one uses some Hot off the Press Botanical Ephemera which has been crumpled and distressed and then ironed flat.
